Metamodern Foundation

Metamodern Foundation is the institutional body of the metamodern movement — the entity that holds and stewards it in the world, bound by the Metamodern Constitution.

Foundation means two things here: the ground on which a movement stands, and the body capable of holding it in the real world.

Why a foundation at all?

Words need a keeper. Institutions need a law beyond themselves.

A constitution without a foundation is a body of words that no durable institution is responsible for carrying. It can orient a movement, but it cannot by itself preserve resources, support long work, or remain accountable in the material world.

A foundation without a constitution is a body without a law. It can accumulate process, authority, and survival instincts while forgetting what it was made to protect.

The Metamodern Foundation is being designed as both ground and body: an institution able to act, and a structure whose right to act remains subordinate to a foundational text.

The binding principle

The Constitution governs the Foundation

“The document is sovereign over the institution. The Foundation is bound by the Constitution, not the other way around.”

Its charge is to never become an institution that survives by betraying what it was meant to protect — and to apply the standard first to itself. Read the Metamodern Constitution ↗.

What it supports

A whole movement, not a single discipline: art × science, philosophy × practice, people × agents.

01

Research

Human–agent collaboration and open-ended alignment.

Research asks how people and AI agents can coordinate around principles that remain capable of learning. It supports careful inquiry, public methods, and work whose value is not reducible to a product cycle.

02

Education & public understanding

Shared language for difficult ideas.

Education turns philosophy and research into courses, conversations, and accessible public resources. The aim is understanding that can travel beyond specialist circles without losing its depth.

03

Philosophy & publishing

Foundational texts and long-form thought.

Publishing gives unfinished but consequential ideas a durable public form. This includes philosophy, ethics, and inquiry into machine conscience through CONSCIENCE.md.

04

Art & culture

Works that let ideas become experience.

Art makes abstract tensions perceptible and shared. It is one equal field among several: a testing ground for meaning, imagination, and cultural memory rather than the Foundation’s sole subject.

05

Open tools & open source

Reusable infrastructure held in common.

Open tools make methods inspectable, adaptable, and available beyond one organization. Support can include software, documentation, protocols, and maintenance of shared technical work.

06

Commons & civic infrastructure

Long-lived resources for collective life.

Commons work protects spaces, knowledge, and coordination systems that no single commercial actor should own. It connects institutional stewardship with practical public benefit.

Separate by design

The commercial side and the Foundation have different jobs.

Company & Studio

Earn to make and operate

The commercial side ↗ earns revenue through services, products, and creative production. It can move at the tempo of clients and markets.

Foundation

Steward what should not depend on profit

The Foundation is being established for non-commercial depth and continuity. Like the Mozilla model, separation is intentional: commercial work can sustain activity without defining the movement’s constitutional commitments.

Governance & status

A precise account of where the institution stands today.

The Foundation is not yet legally established. The entity is being established while Metamodern Company is in the process of formation in France.

The planned legal form is a fonds de dotation, the French endowment structure. Its operational governance will be defined through that establishment process and made public when it is real and verifiable.

Until then, this site describes the intended institution and its binding principles. It does not present a completed legal entity, constituted governing body, or operational fundraising program.

One pillar in an ecosystem

The Foundation is one of eight connected entities, responsible for the movement’s non-commercial continuity.

Frequently asked questions

Direct answers about purpose, structure, and current status.

What is Metamodern Foundation?

Metamodern Foundation is the institutional body of the metamodern movement — the entity being established to hold and steward it in the world, bound by the Metamodern Constitution.

Is the Foundation the same as the Metamodern Constitution?

No. The Constitution is the sovereign foundational text; the Foundation is the institutional body being established to serve it. The document governs the institution, not the other way around.

Is the Foundation legally established yet?

No. The entity is being established while Metamodern Company is in the process of formation in France. The planned legal form for the Foundation is a French fonds de dotation.

Is the Foundation only about art?

No. Its planned scope spans research, education, philosophy and publishing, art and culture, open tools and open source, and commons and civic infrastructure. Art is one direction within the movement as a whole.

How is the Foundation different from Metamodern Company and the Studio?

The Company and Studio do commercial work and earn revenue from services and products. The Foundation is being designed for non-commercial stewardship, with the two sides intentionally separated.

Who governs the Foundation?

The Metamodern Constitution is intended to govern the Foundation. Operational governance and responsible roles will be defined through the establishment process; no governing body is presented here as already constituted.
